When is it appropriate to have a child evaluated?

An evaluation is recommended when a child shows signs of struggling with tasks that are considered age appropriate in any of the key domains of a child’s life. These include school, self-care, peer or family relationships, and self-concept/self-esteem.

How is an evaluation useful?

Evaluations help to identify the cause of a child’s difficulties, allowing the development of an individualized plan of intervention designed to help improve the child’s functioning in any of the key domains.

At what age can a child be evaluated?

As soon as it becomes evident that a child is either not meeting developmental expectations or there has been no successful resolution of a problem despite efforts of the parents, pediatrician, and/or school. We see children beginning at the age of 2 years for Autism Spectrum evaluations and age 5 years for other concerns.

We work to provide an accurate diagnosis using a multi-method assessment approach with input from the child, parents, referral source, and/or teachers.

After the evaluation is complete, we meet with the child's parents to discuss evaluation findings and make recommendations regarding appropriate and effective interventions. We provide a detailed evaluation report to the parents and the referral source who requested the evaluation.

If needed, we will talk with the child’s teachers, school counselors, and/or school administrators to convey test results and discuss recommended academic accommodations.
